Aretéans move through different stages of membership. Each stage of membership has its own permissions, commitments, and responsibilities.
1. FIRE MEMBERS — “I like it”
People over the age of twelve who like Aretéanism may ritualistically walk through fire to become a fire member—also known as a “Courageous Hero of Areté”. This first stage of membership in the Assemblage of Areté is the “I like it” stage. Becoming a fire member is a great way to join in the fun and become part of a growing community. Fire members are typically called to join a kith shortly after their flamewalk.
2. WATER MEMBERS — “I’LL DO IT!”
A member over the age of 18 may advance their stage of membership by being ritualistically immersed in water, thereby becoming a water member or “Mighty Hero of Areté”. This second stage of membership, the “I’ll do it” stage, is reserved for those who understand Aretéanism and are willing to commit to it religiously. Water members are frequently called to take on volunteer roles in the organization.
3. AIR MEMBERS — “I’LL LEAD IT!”
A water member over the age of 24 may qualify to advance their stage of membership by going on a ritual pilgrimage, a powerful journey which transforms them into an air member and official leader in The Assemblage of Areté. Air members, also know as “Triumphant Heroes of Areté”, are trusted by the community and organization. They may be given the authority to run convocations, and even officiate important rituals.
4. EARTH MEMBERS - “I’LL BUILD IT!”
Air members over the age of 30 may qualify to advance their stage of membership by ritualistically claiming stewardship, at which point they become an earth member or “Epic Hero of Areté”. At this stage, earth members have demonstrated expert leadership and a willingness to dedicate their lives to build a world of Areté. Earth members offer crucial mentorship to rising air members and may occupy senior positions in The Assemblage of Areté, including the roles of Narrator or Mugwump.
