The classical element of Earth symbolizes for us stability, growth, and mentorship. It represents becoming fully rooted in our environments—entangled in the complex systems of the world—so that they might be improved. We frequently toil in the earth, as stewards, with the knowledge that we can make new things grow.
Claiming stewardship is a ritual in which we claim responsibility for a public, community area; knowing that despite the additional obligations we are incurring, we will be entitled to nothing from this land. We make a life-long commitment to making that geographical space better; to taking care of it in every way necessary. This ongoing localized work is a symbolic reminder of our commitment to the entire planet and to building a world of Areté. As more heroes demonstrate their stewardship, the world literally becomes a better place, bit by bit.
Those who are 30 years of age or older may ask to claim a place as their stewardship, signifying their readiness to take on the serious commitments of leadership as an Epic Hero in The Assemblage of Areté.
