We should trust in our personal strength to succeed, even with less. When we combine this attitude with compassion there is no reason why we wouldn’t be generous. There are many ways to be generous: with our time, our money, our effort, our possessions, our care, our words; each provides us with an opportunity to give another person something of more value to them than it has to ourselves. By making these kinds of trades we literally grow the wealth of the world, making it a better place for everyone. We should never feel ashamed to ask for what we need, and in exchange we should actively seek to provide what others need.
